The ring is formed into a garden wall by half of the children in ring facing towards the right and placing their hands on the shoulders of the child in front. The other half of ring face towards the left and also place hands on shoulders of child in front. The child who is waiting for a. valentine stands within the garden and sings the first line of song, as Cupid with a bag on his back and a valentine in his hands—on which is fastened a, scarlet heart—taps on the gate. As the children representing the garden-wall sing the rest of the verse, the child in centre rushes to the gate and lets Cupid in. who gives him the valentine. The word boy or girl can be substituted for the word "maid" if desired.
During the singing of second verse the child with letter wanders around the ring, or garden, until he finds his lover true—some favorite playmate, to whom he hands the scarlet heart while tapping softly on the left side of his little sweetheart. The favored one takes the hand of her lover and they return to centre of ring, which finishes the game.
